Suchang Youth Mansion

A facility once considered only a local nuisance has been transformed into a cultural and artistic space that citizens can enjoy together. Suchang Youth Mansion, located in Suchang-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, is a cultural and artistic complex renovated from an apartment building that served as housing for employees of the former KT&G tobacco manufacturing plant. It was used as staff housing from 1976, but after closing in 1996, it was abandoned for over 20 years. The abandoned apartment complex reached a turning point in 2016 when it was selected for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's cultural regeneration project. By preserving the exterior walls of the old building, the 50 years of the apartment's history were kept, while the organized interior was made into a stage for young artists, reborn as a space where old and new coexist. After two years of renovation, it officially opened as 'Suchang Youth Mansion' in December 2017, and in September 2018 the Daegu Contemporary Artists Association took over its operation, reopening on November 3, 2018. Suchang Youth Mansion, which had merely existed as an old building, is now establishing itself as a space for the artistic activities of Daegu's young contemporary artists.
